Liverpool River of Light
Brief
Liverpool's River of Light is a nine-day spectacular event that transforms the Liverpool cityscape and waterfront into a glowing masterpiece. Visitors are invited to explore a series of incredible light installations and immersive displays – each to celebrate creativity and innovation while showcasing Liverpool's vibrant cultural spirit. From iconic landmarks bathed in colour to interactive experiences that spark wonder, the River of Light is a celebration of community, art, and the magic of illumination.
In 2019, REM Events, was appointed Production Partner for the River of Light. Tasked with an ambitious brief, we set out to deliver a city-wide event that would meet high public expectations, manage complex logistics, and unite multiple stakeholders under one seamless plan.

Solution
A complex landscape
The challenge wasn't just scale – it was complexity. River of Light spans numerous locations across Liverpool, each hosting intricate light installations and interactive displays. Meticulous planning was required to host such a large-scale event and ensure the event runs smoothly. As a free, public event, crowd flow was essential to get absolutely right and therefore, needed careful planning.
Co-ordinate with key stakeholders
River of Light was a logistics puzzle on a grand scale. Managing permissions, safety protocols, and aligning local authorities, sponsors, and international artists required exceptional coordination. By working closely with all stakeholders, we streamlined processes and brought clarity to complex operations – ensuring the event ran smoothly from start to finish.
Creative and technical collaboration
As production partner, we worked closely with artists and technical teams to bring their creative vision to life. The production of some of the displays were also down to us and this gave us a real opportunity to showcase our creativity and technical precision.
Shout about it
As this large-scale event is such a visual spectacle, it is also perfect for media engagement. We wanted to showcase this creative and cultural highlight nationally and internationally. Seeing the amazing sites on display in the media also encourages more ticket sales.
Outcome
The final event exceeded all expectations, giving all the illuminating displays so carefully conceptualised and designed, a platform to shine. Over nine days, Liverpool's cityscape and waterfront became a glowing canvas where artists' work captivated thousands of visitors.
High attendance numbers highlighted the event's popularity, and providing easy access and accessible features ensured all visitors could enjoy the experience. Careful planning around crowd flow paid off, ensuring a safe and enjoyable time for everyone exploring the installations.
Financially, the event delivered strong results, thanks to a robust revenue model and strategic partnerships. Our ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders - from local authorities and sponsors to international artists and technical teams – was central to bringing this ambitious vision to life. The success didn't stop there. The festival attracted national and international media coverage, amplifying Liverpool's reputation as a vibrant cultural destination.
"The key to any event is to have the right site and production team on board. REM was instrumental, especially because we had international artists working with us – we needed to translate what they needed in terms of production and they needed to meet our health and safety requirements." — Sue McAdam, Event Manager, Liverpool Culture
