There are few more magical sights than over 120 hot air balloons rising into the early morning skies over Bristol. There are also spectacular evening launches and fantastic night glows as well but sunrises and balloons are the connoisseur’s choice. The Fiesta is now in its 33rd year and it all started in the early 1960’s when Don Cameron came to Bristol as a young, newly qualified aeronautical engineer. At weekends, he would go to the Bristol Gliding Club at Nympsfield and it was in the evening at the bar that many aeronautical exploits were planned.
In 1979, the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta came into being and has grown into one of the biggest outdoor events in Europe and most importantly it’s still free. The REM team have been involved in the event in a variety of roles for lots of those years.
In 2012, REM were awarded a five year contract which covers all the elements of production, management and revenue generation. This arrangement leaves the pilots free to enjoy themselves and entertain the public. During its 33 year history, the Fiesta has become as much of an icon for Bristol as Brunel, Wallace and Gromit ot Concorde and we are proud to be part of a great event’s future.
The 2013 Fiesta was a classic with 5 out of 7 slots being flown ensuring spectacular ascents as well as two stunning night glows which guarantees big crowds. The event attracts media interest from all over the world and we always enjoy having breakfast with the nation’s favourite weather forecaster – Carol Kirkwood.
