Happy (Chinese) New Year

Ancient myth came to life in Liverpool’s Chinatown as a dazzling lumiere showcase marked the ringing in of the Year of the Rooster in spectacular fashion.

Liverpool’s Chinatown sprang up from some of Europe’s earliest Chinese settlers and is now home to a vibrant and diverse community.

The city celebrated its links to the Far East with an extended programme of events in the streets which culminated in a spectacular parade on the final day, backed by street performances, family workshops and market stalls accompanied by a spectacular light show over three nights.

The lumiere installation from Illuminos lit up Chinatown’s most famous landmarks – the Chinese Arch, the Black-E and the former Scandinavian Hotel building.

Playing on an hour-long loop, the projections told  the story of ‘Jingwei and the Ocean’, an ancient Chinese myth about an Emperor’s daughter who perishes at sea, returns to life as a bird and attempts to fill the ocean with debris to prevent others from suffering the same watery fate.

Delighted to be bringing an authentic flavor to the Year of the Rooster, REM were responsible for site and production management and quite a lot of noodling.

“Chinese New Year has developed hugely over the past few years, and it growing year on year. Amazing changes the team have brought in and the projections took it to another level this year.

The weather was relatively kind to us this year on Sunday which was a bonus! But the build and break was especially hard for those on site the days before and during the projection shows- so thank you for everyone’s commitment!

Congrats to another event from this amazing team!”
